Career Overview

Cheryl Jean Stoppelmoor was born on 12 July 1951 in Huron, South Dakota, to an engineer father and a waitress mother. From an early age she dreamed of becoming a performer, taking tap lessons and singing with her father at home. In high school she performed in a jazz trio called the Music Shop Band, which travelled from the Midwest to California in hopes of making it professionally. When the group eventually broke up, Cheryl chose to stay in California and pursue her dream on her own.

Her first real entertainment job was singing backup on the animated series Josie and the Pussycats. After work in commercials she landed a role in the 1973 film Jamaica Reef, where she met her first husband, David Ladd, son of Hollywood legend Alan Ladd. The two married in 1974, and their daughter Jordan was born in 1976. The marriage lasted six years, but by then Cheryl’s career was growing rapidly as she continued to build credits in both film and television.

In 1977, Aaron Spelling recruited her to replace Farrah Fawcett on the hit series Charlie’s Angels. Petite but spirited, Ladd became an immediate favourite as Kris Munroe. “She had to fill a big pair of shoes, and she did it with confidence,” said her co-star Jaclyn Smith. After her 1979 divorce, Ladd began a relationship with Scottish-born Brian Russell, a former pop singer who later moved into film producing. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s she balanced television fame with a growing list of film and music projects.

Cheryl Ladd later earned critical praise for her performance in the edgy drama Permanent Midnight, and portrayed a mother in the family film A Dog of Flanders. She has spoken about her wish to play “a wonderful Mrs. Robinson part, where I can be really attractive, sexual and powerful,” noting that there were several younger actors she would love to work with. Beyond acting, she enjoys golf, painting, and writing children’s books, continuing a long and varied career that has made her one of television’s most recognisable and enduring stars.
