| Wisteria I Claude Monet canvas prints @ ebay.co.uk (direct link to his canvas prints) When guests visited Monet's garden in Giverny, he would rush them down to the pond before dinner 'because the water lilies close before five o' clock'. These lilies, bought from the nurseryman Joseph Bory Latour Marliac, were his joy. He painted the pond from its centre, having rowed out in one of the four boats he called his 'floating studios'. The arched bridge was inspired by the prints of the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, whose work Monet collected. When Monet enlarged the existing pond in 1901, two years after this scen was painted, he built a trellis covering the bridge, over which he trained wisteria. Monet painted with long - handled brushes, which he loaded heavily with paint. The surface of many of his canvasses is so thickly covered that the paint stands proud in raised ridges. This type of painting is known as impasto.
