John Constable C.R. LESLIE Paperback DESCRIPTION It was published first in 1843, six years after Constable's death and was illustrated by a series of mezzatints by David Lucas after Constable's paintings. Its success encouraged Leslie to prepare a second edition, which was published two years later. This second edition, which is reprinted here, was considerably enlarged with further quotations from Constable's correspondence. It has ever since remained the standard biography. However, Constable's reputation remained stagnant for many years, at least in the UK. In all honesty his reputation in England was only established in 1888; in this year Miss Isabel Constable, the artist's daughter, bequeathed to the Nation over three hundred of his drawings and paintings. Until this time there had been only a very few of Constable's paintings on public exhibition; even The Hay Wain, which had created such a stir when it was shown in Paris in 1824, did not reach the National Gallery until 1886. After this date, and with Leslie's book, anyone curious about Constable's work could examine for themselves the illustrations to his book and form their own estimate of Constable's quality.
