Eileen Agar's fascinating career spanned over seventy years, during which time she continually experimented with a wide range of techniques and subject matter.
I became fascinated by her work as a kid in the late 1980s when she really wasn't in fashion then. None of the female Surrealists (even Kahlo) really were that popular then - I think I became aware of her work through the excellent Whitney Chadwick book Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement - it opened up a whole new world of magical artists who had been elbowed to the sides of the stage of Surrealist art. Totally unfair as they were every bit as unforgettable as the male species of the Surrealist - indeed there were many works by Carrington, Varo or Kahlo I found more moving or just plain magical than anything by Dali or Ernst.
It has to be remembered that Kahlo only really came back into fashion (and on her coattails many of the other female Surrealists) after Madonna expressed admiration for her work. Many may disagree with me but it's either that or a massive coincidence that since then her life and art has reached highs I don't think were seen even during her tragic lifetime.
Anyway, Agar was a major figure in that aforementioned book and her work (and life) stood out, not least the Angel of Anarchy. I bought a small piece of hers as in them days the price was still quite low (well 'low' for an artist of her standing). Sadly I sold it yonks ago (I think for less than I paid for it) but I remember opening up the frame for some reason and on the back was another picture of hers.
Would love to have met her. My dealings with her were through her gallery which if I remember correctly was in Soho somewhere so I had no direct contact. By all accounts she was a formidable woman so can you imagine the tales she could of told about the great and the good she knew through her long life. And to listen to how she came to create those works. Just an afternoon, an hour, in the company of greatness ... life can be so unfair sometimes.
