“Botticelli: Bildnis, Mythos, Andacht” is a comprehensive exploration of the works of Sandro Botticelli, one of the most renowned painters of the Renaissance. Edited by Andreas Schumacher and featuring contributions from several art historians, this book delves into the various aspects of Botticelli’s art, focusing on his portraits, mythological paintings, and devotional works.
Key Features:
Mythological Paintings: Botticelli’s grand mythological scenes, created for the palaces of his patrons, are examined in detail. These works are noted for their classical inspiration and the way they rival the grandeur of ancient art.
Devotional Works: The book also covers Botticelli’s devotional paintings, which include his enchanting Madonnas and other religious figures. These works are praised for their beauty and the idealized portrayal of feminine beauty.
Additional Information:
This volume is an essential read for anyone interested in Renaissance art and Botticelli’s significant contributions to the Florentine artistic tradition.
It's a comprehensive and, literally heavy book.
Botticelli was initially apprenticed to a goldsmith before training under the esteemed painter Fra Filippo Lippi. By 1470, he had established himself as an independent master with his own workshop in Florence. His style is characterized by its linear grace and often features mythological and religious themes.
Despite his success, Botticelli’s reputation declined after his death on May 17, 1510, but he was later rediscovered in the 19th century by the Pre-Raphaelites. Today, his works are celebrated for their beauty and contribution to Renaissance art.
Nickname Origin: Botticelli’s real name was Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi. The name “Botticelli,” meaning “little barrel,” was originally a nickname given to his older brother Giovanni, which Sandro later adopted.
Unmarried Life: Botticelli never married and lived with his family throughout his life. He spent most of his life in the same neighborhood in Florence.
Sistine Chapel Contribution: Botticelli was one of the artists commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV to paint frescoes in the
Sistine Chapel in Rome. His work there includes scenes from the life of Moses and the Temptations of Christ.
Influence of Savonarola: Later in his life, Botticelli was influenced by the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola, whose sermons against secular art and culture led Botticelli to destroy some of his own paintings.
