| Kathe Kollwitz Kathe Kollwitz was one of the most powerfully emotional German artists of the 20th-century. She married a doctor in 1891 and settled in Berlin in a slum where she lived until she was bombed out in 1943 ... Color Lithography on paper © VBK Wien, 2009, Private Collection She soon began to make etchings, woodcuts and lithographs mainly on the Mother and Child theme and often with left-wing intentions (Weavers' Rising, 1893-7, and Peasants' War, 1903-8). Most of her best works are tragic and many of them are specifically pacifist - her son was killed in 1914 and her grandson in 1942.
